History of the Old Dairy Cottage
The Old Dairy Cottage dates back to 1709. The year in which Samuel Johnson was born, just two years after the Act of Union and six years before the uprising led by the Old Pretender, This historical building is situated in the Royal Burgh of Auchterarder a very attractive town in the Perthshire countryside close to the world famous Gleneagles Hotel
Our family have owned the cottage for many years, firstly in the 1920's when Norman's grandmother lived here and had a small croft with a few milk cows, hens and pigs. She sold milk in cans around the doors to her neighbours and was famous for her ice-cream which was made on the premises up until the 1940's. Many people came from near and far to sample Duncan's ice-cream.
In the 1940's Norman's father who came from Rothiemay, near Huntly in the North East of Scotland, married his mother then Janet Duncan and carried on the family croft later buying a larger milk business and expanded considerably delivering milk in glass bottles in Auchterarder, Gleneagles and surrounding areas.
Norman was brought up at The Old Dairy Cottage and carried on the family business until 1996 when the milk round was sold.
In 1994 we totally renovated the cottage into two cottages and since then have welcomed guests from all over the world. Norman and Hazel live beside the cottages in The Old Dairy Yard and have three grown up daughters, who have all flown the nest.
